Welcome and enjoy. It was dark and calm as I drove home from a friend's house. The specifics leading up to that point will be spared from here, just know that I was in a bad spot. I was angry and frustrated and couldn't seem to find an answer anywhere for what was bothering me.

You see, I was in a mood where everything was annoying me. The radio station was playing the same song as always. I flipped the station and it was more of the same. Again and again, there was nothing to listen to so I turned the radio off completely. All I had was the nagging whirr of rubber along the road.

Journey back a few months. I was in my classroom, laying out materials for the next day, when a good friend came into the room and invited me to an upcoming performance. A choir group from Africa was visiting her church and she thought I might enjoy it. I still remember the thought that ran through my mind. "I have no reason not to". So I said I would go along.

The performance was great. There was an incredible amount of talent in the young singers and the dancing was wonderful. As the evening was drawing to a close, the pastor of the hosting church asked if anyone was new or visiting for the first time. Unabashedly, I raised my hand. I didn't really think about it. I just did it. Afterwards I was given a CD as a welcome gift, which I thanked them for and then it sat in the car...for months.

It was at this point when my story begins to unfold in a spiritual way that I never would have foreseen. I suppose I should apologize that if there was a weekend in July 2012 where you couldn't find God, it's because he was with me...in an intense intervention.

The whirring of the tires was getting to me so and I recognized that sitting in the seat beside me was that same CD...waiting. I slid it in and it allowed it to play automatically, expecting...well, not really knowing what to expect.

The same pastor came through the speakers and began to weave a message that seemed written for me.
"Now is your testimony."
"Stop regretting the past and worrying about the future and live your testimony now."

I was consumed by the message and as soon as I arrived home, I texted the same friend who had invited me and told her I would like to go to church with her the following morning. That Sunday I truly became a Christian.

Looking back on my story, it was perfectly poignant that, God (in CD form) was riding along in the passenger seat all that time.

Reach into a cage that houses a hamster, guinea pig, rabbit, mouse, or gerbil and you get one of two reactions every time.

1) It sleeps soundly and does't notice until you startle it awake, which leads directly to;
2) Complete and utter panic as it desperately attempts to evade you.

A rat on the other hand waits for you. The rat sees you enter the room and goes straight for his front door, stands up on his hind legs and waits for you to visit.

You see rats are social by nature and if you rear a pup, there will be a strong trust for humans. Like dogs or cats, a rat that gets plenty of positive attention will be a great friend. Maybe he won't fetch the newspaper, but he will still show his love in other ways.

I've had seven rats. I had 6 females over a few years and I adopted a male rat. Without fail, each of those rats had grown huge attachments to me and treated me kindly. They came to the cage door to be picked up - not to escape, they were relaxed while being held, and they groomed me. Yes, every single one of them would check my eyebrows and beard until they were satisfied that I was OK.

That's the sort of connection you can have with rats. They want to be part of a group and you just won't get that from many other rodents.

Children who can be taught how to care for small animals will enjoy this same friendship and learn valuable lessons respecting a pet. Rats are rewarding pets that deserve a loving home and will thank you in their own special way...not by sleeping all day.
So, there you have it. Shakespeare himself has been trying for ages to explain how rats simply got shortchanged in the PR department. You just can't say "Rat" and make it sound nice. "Rodent" and "vermin" don't sound much better, either. Have you ever tried to use either of these as a compliment? or a nickname for your spouse?

What if we just started calling them something friendly and familiar... like"giggles"? Who wouldn't want a furry little giggle in their classroom???

Talk about rats and each time, without fail,
Somebody somewhere will mention the tail.
"It's so gross and disgusting," they all seem to say,
But let's try to see it a different way.

Their tail is so awesome, to do what it does,
Keeping their balance on wires up above.
It's brilliant and amazing, that long skinny tail,
It steadies them steady on the narrowest trail.

To see it in action is a fabulous sight,
with expert precision it shifts left and shifts right.
Just crossing a rope can be quite a big challenge,
But thanks to the tail, the rat keeps his balance.

Its a matter of needs and its needs are quite plain,
If it falls from above it will feel all sorts of pain.
Its comes down to a science called Rotational Inertia,
So stop worrying about it. The tail ain't gonna hurt ya.

"But, Liam, just look! It just isn't fair!
Why does that tail have to look naked and bare?"
A very good question and thanks for being so patient,
It's the simple little science of Thermoregulation.

When the rats getting too warm, the tail cools it down,
It helps it stay cozy the whole year round.
Blood vessels expand when it's getting too hot
That's Vasodilation. Is that cool or what?!

Vasoconstriction is the opposite way.
The tail keeps the heat from escaping away.
Blood vessels get smaller and trap in the heat.
It's a clever little trick that just can't be beat.

So next time someone tells you how gross their tails are,
You're armed with the knowledge to be a rat-star,
to stand on your soapbox and passionately wail,
"I KNOW WHAT IT'S FOR SO I LOVE THAT TAIL!"

To finish, here's a thought. As teachers, we urge our students to look beyond the flesh and to see others for who they really are...

I can call you that because you've caught on that I am writing about rats and you are still reading. That's a big step when you bring these furry little fellas into a conversation.

So you must be in one of three camps.

In Camp A, they're saying "yeah, I know, rats make great pets." They are following along, nodding their heads, and in total agreement.

Camp B says "alright, let's hear what you got but...it ain't gonna happen!"

Then there's Camp C. Camp C looks like this: Skin crawling. Heebie jeebies. Shuddering with disgust. Appalled by the fact that they are still reading this, Camp C juuust can't stop. They're the ones that watch Fear Factor through their fingers pretending to cover their eyes. You guys are funny.

I suppose, technically, there's a Camp D ... but they already left.

That's why I brought it up. I'm taking it upon myself to advocate for these remarkable rodents because not many will.

Because, you see, a teacher at my school, let's call him... Don :), is talking about getting a pet and I've heard this conversation before. It goes like this:

"I'm going to get a class pet," says teacher.
"Ah, great! You should get a rat!" Say I.
"Ew! No! That's disgusting! Why would you say that? Yulchk!!"

To which, there is no real return.

But there are SO many good reasons to have a pet rat instead of other animals. Some reasons are simply positive attributes of Rattus rattus while others are the drawbacks of other animals.

So over the next few posts, I will be exploring and illustrating why a rat might just find his way into your classroom - invited even!

Afterwards, I will explore a few tips and bits of advice about keeping and caring for rats.

In the meantime, what camp are you in?

Do you see a place for a little rat in your learning space or is there a definite line that has been drawn between rodents and students? Let me know! It'll be like a survey!

Hope you stick around! You too, 'Don'.

<:3 )~~

I got everything all plotted out and started recording and, presto, complete and utter failure. It left a bad taste in my mouth about the whole process and I ended up whimpering back to traditional teaching approaches.

Well, I'm back. I floated around Pinterest for a while (I'm sure NONE of you know what Pinterest is) and came across this one:

http://www.knewton.com/flipped-classroom/

There's a really great graphic on it that just isn't loading onto my page so you will have to check it out.

So here we go again. I'm going to have a think about how I can make this work for my kids and then make another attempt. If you hear any whimpering, you can probably guess how it went...

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1487446421606884502.post-55804616398488061312012-06-10T11:15:00.001+12:002012-06-10T11:46:00.964+12:00All Clean (sort of)I did it! It all started with a gentle nudge over Skype that I should shave the beard ("You need to trim back the beard, Bushman" is kinda how it sounded). I knew she was right and before you know it, one thing led to another and all sorts of changes occurred. The beard was shaved, a squirrel and two well-fed pigeons were rendered homeless, and even Twist of Liam ended up getting a spruce up as well! Not bad for a day and a half. By the way, if anyone is looking for a squirrel or well-fed pigeons, let me know.

The design was getting tired and, when I looked at all the fancy fonts and images you are all using from I-don't-know-where, I have to admit I felt just a weeeee bit jealous. Okay, a LOT jealous. So what's a guy to do? This is what a guy is to do:

1. Don't ask anyone for help. That is imperative. To do so would surely only make things go faster, smoother, and all-round better.
2. Fiddle delicately with swatches and fonts. Eenie, meenie, minie, not that one. (by the way, does anyone actually know how to spell minie?)
3. Tinker around with what vague idea comes to his mind. "Yep it will be green and lave a lime. Let's do it."
4. Pretend not to see what time it is and how long he has spent on that vague idea.
5. Close his eyes, cross his fingers, hope for the best, and brace for impact. Hit "save".

...6. Tell everyone about it because I did it! Err, I mean HE did it! Way to go Generic Male Example Guy!

So with the new design, I rethought the description that was along the top and I think the rewrite is a lot more inline with what has been and will continuing to happen on this site. No, not the extended unexplained absences, silly. The general commentary and reflection, sprinkled with neat-o ideas for anyone who hasn't thought of it already.

I hope you like it. It's a bit less "in your face" and a bit more...je ne sais quoi. The words that come to my mind sound like I'm promoting a summer beverage.

Fresh, cool, clean, and inviting. Just pour yourself a glass, add vodka, and you have the perfect summer cocktail! Or enjoy it without the alcohol - totally your decision (but most of you ARE on holidays now... and the rest of us could probably use a drink...).

Hope you enjoy the new design and I didn't just lose all my readers!

BY THE WAY, A while back a gentleman commented on my site about the design. If he ever revisits this site, I hope he approves. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1487446421606884502.post-67474486186775528112012-06-02T23:11:00.002+12:002012-06-02T23:11:51.103+12:00MAC-ing the Most of ItSo as I mentioned last time, I've been going through some changes. The whole "Engagement-Turned-Long-Distance-Relationship-Thing" has been an ordeal that I continue to work through and can only tell myself each day that I'm one day closer to being back together again. 199 days until I fly back to Canada and 21 hours of flight time - not that I'm counting.

More to the point though, another lifestyle change I've made was to switch to a Mac. Yay! I kind of look at it like learning styles - we all have our own preference for how to learn so it makes sense that we all have our own preferred way to work. I'm not making a judgement or wanting to start a debate about which is better but I will say that I've had mine for almost a month now and I might understand if Alanna got a little jealous. I pretty much love my Mac as much as a person can healthily love a piece of computer goodness.

So, if it's not to settle which is best, why am I telling you this? Well it's actually because I don't really know how to use it. Nay, I don't know how BEST to use it. I've got a lot of the basics sorted and I know Garage Band, iMovie, and Comic Life are great and but what I really want to know is this:

If you were setting up a new Macbook (Pro), what would be the programs you would MAKE SURE were installed?

P.S. If you use a PC, don't worry, I still love you. :D
(It's so nice to be back!)

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1487446421606884502.post-56134927626071647662012-05-28T22:14:00.001+12:002012-05-28T22:14:43.267+12:00Did Ya Miss Me?I know how you must all be feeling - abandoned, betrayed, confused and disillusioned, and believe it or not, I didn't even TRY to alphabetise that!

No, I know what you must be thinking - he just up and left! No warning. No Terminator-esque "I'll be back". Just one minute he's blogging about his classroom and the next he has vanished.

Where did he go?

Well, I'll be honest, I didn't really go anywhere but life has taken a dramatic turn over the last few months.

First, I got engaged (Yay!). My beautiful fiancé, Alanna has agreed to be my wife and I feel fully, completely blessed to have her by my side. Which brings me to...

Secondly, she has flown home to Canada. To make a long and complicated and frustrating story short, we agreed that, professionally and financially, it made a lot more sense for her to go home and establish herself while I continued to finish the school year here, collecting my salary and maintaining a good rapport with the school, until December. Then I go home to be with her again.

For that to happen, the last while has been a whirlwind of packing, purging, selling, and donating. As she moved, I moved. My living conditions have been reduced from a two bedroom apartment to renting a room, from living with the woman I want to hold forever to living with a guy who...well...you get the point.

According to the calendar, it has been 29 days since she flew home. Leading up to it, I was confident that we would be able to real with it all and it would be over before we knew it. The moments leading up to her having to step through the "Passengers Only" barrier were impossibly emotional. 235 days without my Lanny. I proceeded to dissolve into a hysteric mess. I'm glad none of you saw me. It was pretty embarrassing. It hasn't felt like 29 days - more like 229. Too often, I've thought about packing up early but haven't. It isn't getting any easier, either. But I have to just keep plugging away.

So here I am, plugging away.

So this isn't a "check this out" post or a "this, you gotta try" post. It's a "sorry about the absence" kinda post, a "no hard feelings, right?" kinda post.

So, yeah. No hard feelings?

Over the last week and a bit, I have been practically living in my classroom but the results are finally ready for your viewing pleasure. The room isn't completely de-cluttered. I have a few things that are a bit difficult to physically dispose of (I'm not being sentimental - they just don't fit in the rubbish!) but the end result is a HEAP OF SPACE. You'll see what I mean as you scroll through the pictures.

Enjoy.
This is how the room looked when the students (and parents) walked in on the first day.

From the same position, here is the front instructional area and my <strike>dumping ground </strike> desk. Each whiteboard slides across to reveal more shelving. More on that in a minute.

Disclaimer: this is my desk BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR BEGAN. You can tell because the wood surface of the desk is visible. Currently, it is a tad embarassing since Hurricane Week-One has ripped through and this area looks sadly chaotic. I'll get to that next week...maybe.

We've moved from the back now, standing by the Smart Board and looking back to the main entrance. Aren't those desks nicely lined up? I bet they look like that at the end of each day, right?

Not!

And now back to the front. These are the shelves that are revealed behind the board closest to my desk. Let me give you a tour:
First floor: Newsprint and Black Construction Paper
Second Floor: Paint, Glue / Coloured Cardstock, Laminating Sleeves
Third Floor: Student Stationary Sets, Wool (???) / Orange, Yellow, Blue Paper
Fourth Floor: MY Stationary, Stapler, Whiteboard Markers / Red, Orange, Green Paper.

I mentioned Student Stationary Sets. Here's a close-up of the "Can o' Cut n' Paste". Inside, are 3 scissors and three gluesticks.

And these are the "Can o' Drawing's". As the picture explains, each contains 12 colouring pencils, 6 drawing pencils, 3 rulers, 1 sharpener, and 1 rubber. I have four of each of these can sets to spread them around the class.

The coloured paper is sorted in these collapsable shelves. They lay like this to let the whiteboard slide shut...

...And pull open like this when I need access. It was a lucky coincidence that the collapsable shelves fit behind the board.

Finally, this is what I was hinting at above when I said there was a heap of space. When all is said and done, I ended up with all of this space available for later use.

Well, that's all for today's tour. I hope you liked what you saw and for those of you who commented on how beautiful the dark walls and white trim was, I hope I didn't let you down. This has been our introductory week and next week the students start timetabled study full tilt. That means they will be leaving me for most of the week and I will have two other classes coming around as well. When this week is over, I might be singing a different song but for now, I feel really organised and prepared to help my students learn.

For now though, I need to check in and find out what I've missed at Jodi's Clutter-Free Classroom!

See you there!

I know that some of my readers (I hasten to call you 'followers' - it sounds strangely cult-like) are anxiously awaiting pictures of the de-cluttered class because one of them is a few doors away and has been hassling me to post some. I promise they are are on their way but you are going to have to wait just a few days longer. I have to go away for a staff PD session and the weekend is pretty booked, too.

Monday is the last day before students start in so the room will HAVE to be ready by then. What you can take from that is that I will HAVE to have some pictures ready for Monday night (NZ time). I hope you can wait that long and I hope it's worth the wait.

Thinking of "worth" it, thanks to everyone who is leaving the warm and fuzzy comments. They make me feel all...ummm...well, warm and fuzzy inside. :)

Hmm. That's all I have to say? Well enjoy the brevity. The next one will probably be HEAPS longer.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1487446421606884502.post-54649039091266815562012-01-28T09:48:00.000+13:002012-01-28T09:48:13.062+13:00Thanks!Those of you faithful (and patient) followers who have been reading along since Twist of Liam was in it's infancy can attest to the fact that this blog has grown, changed, and evolved over the last 8 months. Design changes, html, flavicons, twitter, and comment replying are just a few of the changes that you may have witnessed as I incorporated this technological talent into my own repertoire.

Feedback has been lovely with kind remarks abound. I love reading that I made someone giggle, chuckle, laugh out loud, or so hard that they snorted their coffee out their nose (sorry if it made a mess on the keyboard). I feel that the time I spend writing Twist of Liam is quickly justified when someone comments that they appreciate, or better yet will be using, or even BETTER yet HAVE used, an idea that I've shared. Yes, feedback is fabulous.

Sometimes you get feedback that isn't so fun to read.

An old post I wrote, called Punctuation Ninjas, recieved a recent visitor and, subsequently, a little comment.
Tony said
"I googled 'punctuation ninja' (as you do) and thought I would have quite liked to read this, until Firefox finished rendering and I saw the font. I can tell from the recent posts lists that there's a lot of content here, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that I'm not the only one who just bypasses it entirely because of the presentation. Just thought you might like to know."

When I first read it, I thought to myself, Wow...what a goof! He let a stupid little thing like the font prevent him from reading and possibly even gaining a new idea. What a dumb-dumb. I even started to type up a little reply that said basically that same thing. Time was limited so I left it to return to later.

Lucky Liam.

Leaving it for later meant I had time to stew over it, get angry, moan and mutter to myself, and then come back to it. And isn't it funny? When I clicked on repy the second time around, my attitude had completely changed! I wasn't angry and offended anymore, I was thankful that someone took the time to help me be better! He saw something that could be holding me back and offered his two cents worth.

And it's funny how things work out.

Not long later, I got a wonderful comment on a more current blog. I was beside myself in shock as I read that I was Jodi's next pick as Feature Teacher. I told Ms M, authour at Ms. M's Blog and A Teacher's Plan and one of the longest standing ToL readers (Yes, I've adopted my own acronym), "I guess this is how it must feel if you were to save a kitten from a burning tree in the middle of nowhere while sleepwalking only to wake up and not have a clue what you did that everyone is applauding you for!" I didn't think I was doing anything special. Jodi disagrees, apparently.

Expect company, she said.

Ya think?!? ToL is still only young so, yeah, I still check out my stats practically daily. And to be honest, I will probably continue to watch my stats well into it's awkward adolescence. But thanks to that Jodi's feature, that was the busiest traffic day I've had. Ever. Thanks to the traffic, My followers have doubled. DOUBLED.

And thanks to Tony, I had changed the font and my recent visitors have been able to enjoy the content easier. Put the two together and it's funny how things work out.

So, thank you Tony for the feedback. I hope you come back soon and see the changes.

Thank you Jodi for the wonderful praise and attention that your feature has afforded me. I hope I can live up to the expectations of your readers who have hopped aboard.

Thank you readers who have been around and helped Twist of Liam grow. There are too many to mention here but you know and I know who you are. I hope you all continue to enjoy reading my blog.

And thank you to the new readers that have joined in and given my blog a chance. I hope you find it worth following and, if you do, share the ideas you find here.
Reading through, I think I can manage this week's focus as it was something I had been trying to improve last year.

Papers are the bane of my desk's existence. They are prolific at my school with notices, weekly outlines, memos, notes, thises, thats, these, those, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. My principal has a philosophy about dealing with paper clutter:

"Touch every piece of paper once."

He says "if you pick a sheet of paper up, put it down where it is meant to be, be it a file, a notice board, or the recycling". I say "cool".

Now while I can't quite get to that standard YET, I would like to share a little resource that I posted back in September to help you keep organised. I was so stoked. I had my camera, I had my rules for dealing with the clutter, and I had my plan of attack.

You wouldn't believe how quickly I got to step 3.

...The trouble was I skipped Steps 1 and 2. It took nearly an hour before I even made it to my classroom. There was such a buzz of excitement amongst staff who were so happy to see each other after the summer holidays, that it was virtually impossible to not give in and start handing out hugs.

Regardless, I eventually made it into the room and did my best to stare down the shelves. A wall-to-wall shelving unit filled haphazardly by a team of unfocussed and unmotivated eleven year olds can hold an AWFUL lot of stuff. I thought if I just gave it The Look (you teachers know the one I'm talking about), the clutter might sort itself out. No such luck. I guess, as a third year teacher, that's one more thing I will have to work on.

Alright then. We'll do this the HARD way. That's code for manually and autonimously. That's code for I pulled absolutely everything out by hand. 1pm rolled around and here I was.

No, that's not me smiling. That's a teacher buddy that is about to start his first year. I was multitasking (that's sure to earn me SOME points, right?) and helping him get himself sorted as I tried to do the same for myself.

But this is what came off shelves and what I faced this morning when I returned. The magic elves did NOT show up, despite leaving out cookies and shotglasses of Starbucks, so I had to deal with it myself.

Not fun and not done (and the clock isn't working either).

But the shelves have been cleaned and I got started on refilling them.

Tomorrow's mission is to get the rest of the mess off the desks, start thinking about displays and try to catch up with Jodi's mounting pile of tips and tasks.

All in all, I'm feeling good about this mission. I don't suspect I will ever make it to the "hall of tidy-fame" (where all the awards are level, aligned, alphabetised, and colour-coded) but it's better already. And that's why I joined in in the first place.

I'm going in!This is it. Tomorrow morning I'm heading in to my classroom after a month and a half hiatus! To say I'm excited to clean up my act is a bit of an understatement. Anyone who has been patiently following my blog (waiting for <strike>SOMETHING</strike> ANYTHING to happen) will attest to my eagerness to get this party started.

Alas, the time hath come!
Doing my best to keep up with the Clutter-Free Classroom Project, I've spent the evening watching Piha Rescue, Criminal Minds, and Minority Report, all while typing, printing, laminating, and cutting away, making up "stuff" in anticipation for D(e-clutter)-Day. I've got agenda cards made up, I've got out of class passes ready, book box labels prepped, and heaps of stuff just waiting for me to get in to the school so I can use, abuse, and extort my colour printing priveledges!

The plan is pretty simple:
1. take better pictures so I can gloat about how messy my classroom is.
2. Turn on iTunes to get the groove going.
3. <strike>Procrastinate</strike>.
4. Lay out boxes for "free-to-a-good-home" stuff and bags for "no-one-in-their-right-mind-would-want-this" things.
5. <strike>Procrastinate some more</strike>.
6. Tackle shelves, one by one, wiping, purging, and kissing goodbye.
7. Itemise everything that (miraculously) makes the cut and survives my 10 rules.
8. Wonder how the heck I am going to put everything away before I have to leave.
9. Haul my "winnings" outta sight.
10. Pat myself on the back for a job well done.
11. Take pictures to make myself feel good.
12. Share and hope I can keep up with this project! Wow. Week 3 and I'm already falling behind. ~sigh.~

Well, that's the plan anyways. We'll see how it goes.

Chat soon.
I thought to myself

'Self, this is a good pace for us.'
In fact, the timing was perfect! I am (in New Zealand so we are...) on summer holiday and this is a great project to start in on as the year is about to approach. Fully energised and eager to get on with it, I joined in.

Week One: post some pictures of the clutter. Luckily I had already taken them at the end of last year. Done.
Week Two: make a plan. Rules for decluttering took a bit of effort but I eventually ended up with 10 that seem pretty good.
Week Three: start purging --WHAT? Already?? Jodi, You're kidding, right? Right?? Umm, ...Jodi?

She wasn't kidding. And to make matters worse, I can't help but notice a few of you are doing quite well getting on with the project. Rubbish bags filled and tied, free to a good home tables filled for picking through, shelves emptied, sorted, and (dare I say it?) dusted! Tsk, tsk. You kids are too much!

So the pressure's on.

I've got two days to go till I get the green light to drive in and dive in so I can try and keep up with you Keeners and Declutterers!

Despite all this ranting and raving, I am pretty excited to get in there and toss the things that don't pass Rules Test. My only worry is that I'm going to end up with a cereal box-sized pile of things that get tossed and end up hardly any further ahead. Fingers crossed.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1487446421606884502.post-14889431842167147262012-01-10T01:22:00.001+13:002012-01-10T14:07:21.477+13:00Clutter-Free Week #2: My 10 Rules for DeclutteringHaving spent the last few hours hyperventilating into a paper bag and rocking back and forth in an anxious fit, I've managed to come to terms with the fact that I've committed to this challenge and I am about to clean up my act.

Okay. That's a bit of a stretch. I wasn't really in such a desperate state. Instead, I chose to ignore it all and go watch Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows. (Good movie, by the way)

I'm home now, flipping through my blogroll and it's reminding me of the looming task set before me. Thanks a lot, Jodie.

-sigh-
"Compose a list of 'non-negotiable must-purge' rules"
After a great deal of thought, here's what I got:

Twist of Liam's 10 Rules for Decluttering
It's gotta "go" if:
{1}
It isn't actually mine/signed out by me.
This one's the easiest one. It's pretty obvious when you own something. And most people generally have a good idea if they are supposed to have something of someone else's. If they're neither, they're out.

{2}
It's in embarassing shape.
You know what I'm talking about. Those ratty old things that have seen better days and should have been thrown out years ago. The things that you make sure are out of sight when visitors are expected and direct attention away from when they show up without notice. Simply put: Broken, battered, bruised, beyond repair - buh-bye!

{3}
It's been in a cupboard/box/shelf for a year and not used.
I've been teaching for two years; this will be my third. That being said, there are things on my shelves that I had every intention of using but haven't. If it hasn't been used yet, chances are I won't use it this year. Like a basketball coach, you want everyone to win but it starts with having a lot of difficult talks that go something like this: "Sorry kiddo. You've got real potential but I just don't have a place on the team where you can really show your talents. Miss Elsewhere is starting soccer tryouts this week though. You should give it a go." You wish them well and suggest they go practice their corner kick... with Miss Elsewhere.

{4}
I can find it online/in an easliy accessible resource.
I like convenience. I like knowing that if i need something, I can pull it out of the cupboard at a moment's notice. I know there are items on those shelves purely for the purpose of saving me a from trotting or surfing to find it where it is meant to be found. Get over it and put more steps (or clicks) in your day!

{5}
The only reason I have it in my room is so I don't have to go next door/to the resource room and borrow it.
Practically the same as the rule above but regarding tools/stationary. I know nobody likes a teacher that borrows EVERYTHING from you and nobody wants to be "that guy/girl" but we don't all need a phillips screwdriver in our drawer. We don't all need a paper guillotine. I have the set of scredrivers and a few screws (loose?). Karen knows she can pop in if she needs them. I know I can borrow the paper cutter from Karen. They say don't reninvent the wheel but we don't all have to go out and buy one each either.

{6}
It doesn't belong in a toolbox/pencilcase/desk/backpack.
If if doesn't go in either of these conventional storage devices, I probably don't need it. I know that science materials are an obvious challenge to this one but I don't teach science, ergo I shouldn't have it in my room. If I do find myself needing a set of testtubes or a bunsen burner, I know where I can find one thanks to Rule {5}. And on that note, if I do borrow a bunsen burner, I then follow Rule {1} and return it to where it belongs.

{7}
The only box label that is really appropriate is "Stuff".
After all of this, I should be thinning out the clutter in my room and I should be down to the proverbial "odds and ends" of teaching. The rubberband ball, the lock and key that isn't securing anything, and these sorts of things. I think decluttering and having a box marked "Misc." is like swearing off of coffee unless it's lunchtime. It's probably going to fail Rule {8}, anyways.

{8}
I don't have an actual plan for it's use.
Remember my pegboard question? I do. I inherited this great piece of pegboard that I knew had a purpose so I kept it...and kept it...and kept it. Nearly a year later and it has been standing in a corner like a British guard. Doing nothing (no offence to any British guards who are reading this), not even looking pretty (again, no offence), just there. Well, "no more" I say! If I don't know what I'm going to do with it, I do know: get rid of it. Sorry to British guards and pegboards everywhere.

{9}
It's not appropriate for the ages I'm teaching.
I have some things that I have collected and acquired because I know to expect teaching kids at different levels. These are the kinds of things that I know will make my life so much easier if when I get a Grade 2 class. Until that day, however, those things have no purpose in my classroom. Plain and simple: If it's not for these students, it's not for this classroom. It's almost peotic.

{10}
I'm keeping it because it was a gift from a student.
I'm really sorry, James. I enjoyed teaching you but I'm not keeping this snowglobe on my desk. I know, sentimental thingamajiggies are sweet and thoughtful. They remind us of the kids we connected with and inspired. They collect dust. They take up space. They serve no purpose. Too harsh? Maybe. But If I'm sitting at my desk after school, I probably have something better to do than stare at a World's Best Teacher card from Sally and reminisce. If not, I should go home and take a well-deserved break.

There you have it. Twist of Liam's 10 Rules for Decluttering. I hope they help you come up with your own. I would love to hear what you think of these and if you want to some of them for your own endeavours be my guest. My only request is you cite your source and link back to this post so others can do the same!
Don't mind if I do!

Situation #1. For the third year in a row, I have moved classrooms. If you include the fact that my first class got renovated halfway through the year and I had to move into the library until it was finished and then move back, I will have set up a learning environment five times in three school years. That is ignoring the times throughout the year when I re-evaluated the arrangement and moved things around.

Upside: I've had lots of practice moving furniture and supplies around in the search for the most effective use of space.

Downside: I'm not there yet. I'm frustrated by clutter, piles, stacks, and heaps of things. I like organisation and each year I put in my reflection that I will be more organised.

Situation #2. Clutter-Free Classrooms is willing to help the likes of me. It seems as though I/we can look forward to tips, tools, and strategies to help me along. Wicked. Thanks. My new classroom has HEAPS of shelving. These pictures don't really show it but one wall is covered by three sliding whiteboards that conceal shelf after shelf after shelf. Below the whiteboards are, you guessed it, more shelves! I have what is best described as a miniature kitchen with sink, counter, cupboards, and drawers. all of this is at the other end of my room nearest the Smart Board. I have another mobile cupboard that is almost as big as my Teacher Desk. My classroom is in disarray so the cleaners can get around and do a real thorough job over summer.

Downside: I'm struggling to actually come up with a downside to this except that I have HEAPS of stuff that will need to be organised. It's doable but I need a plan.

So this is it. I'm joining in the fun. I promise to take photos once I'm in my classroom and I look forward to following along as we join together as a unified force and tackle our collective messes!

Yuck.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1487446421606884502.post-71578964401146157532012-01-02T12:27:00.000+13:002012-01-02T12:27:36.055+13:00Looking ahead to 2012Some of my colleagues think I'm nuts.

Actually many of them do but some are convinced due to the fact that I am a few weeks into my summer break and thinking about the next school year.

I can't help it.

I'm thinking about it now because it is going to be a wicked, wonderful challenge. Again.

I'm heading into my third year as a specialist teacher. First year was Maths (yes, North Americans, there is supposed to be an 's' there in New Zealand). That was a challenge because I was teaching Maths to three classes and {duh} because I was a first year teacher. Second year I moved to English. Reputed to be the subject with the largest workload due to marking and assessments, it was a challenge because I needed to get comfortable and get organised...FAST.

Third year: Third challenge.
In 2012, I will still be in the English faculty, teaching reading and writing to Year 7 and 8 students but there's a twist! This year, my form class is the enrichment class!

How do I feel about this?
1. Honoured! I didn't ask for it. I hadn't even considered it. I was looking at 2012 as a year to consolidate my learning over the last two years and really make a go of it. Instead, I was called in to the office and asked if I would be willing to teach this incredibly bright bunch of boys and girls. Stammering and caught off guard, I accepted.
2. Excited! What a wicked, wonderful opportunity to challenge myself and the children with a degree of freedom that comes with an adapted learning class. I was soon after asked to draft up the class outline so we could get it published.
"Huh? Write up the outline for the class? What?"
"Yeah, write what you hope to achieve by the end of each term. Here's a sample to help guide you"
"Sweet!"
Practically 'Carte Blanche'! The opportunity to take some of the big ideas I've heard about {read about on blogs ;) } and dreamed about implementing and put them into practice is more than I could have hoped for!
3. Nervous! Third year teacher, getting himself organised in his teaching career. These are bright kids. The brightest we've got. I can't help but worry if I will miss the target with them. Will I shoot too low and bore them? Will I shoot too high and rob them of the opportunity to excel? Naturally, my inclination is to aim high and bring it down to their level but I'm still stuck wondering 'how high?'

Altogether, I am super-stoked to be working with these students! I have big ideas {and so does the school} for these children.

So I'm thinking about school.

And some of my colleagues think I'm nuts.

We are enjoying our summer break and (many of us) are looking forward to the new teaching year. Starting a new year is an exciting time (as many of you were very effective at reminding me about half a year ago) and it's about to bring lots of challenges {will post about THAT later}. But as I was saying...

What a great way to start 2012! I have been following Crazy For Fifth {she's on my blogroll, check it out} and her post today was a welcome surprise. She is linking up on a a linky party from Secondary Solutions to get Middle and High School teachers together and build a bit of a community. I had been trying to do this myself, jumping from blog to blog to blog, from one blogroll to another to another, chasing the white rabbit of high school teaching. It was exhausting and while I found many interesting and wonderful bloggers, but there had to be a better way.

Here it is: an easier way. Link up. Comment below so I can check out your blog. Join in. Enjoy.
How else would you manage to be in two places at once? If anything grabs a teacher's attention, it's the possibility of that!

Thanks to Ms M and Kristen for the feedback. Their comments from my last post raised a very valid point which I had been wrestling with. In a perfect world, we would all have access to all tools and resources but we don't, so we make do with what we have. The students in my school do not have reliable access to the Internet. Many of them do not have a computer in their home so some serious head scratching and problem solving is in order.

I have been considering a few different approaches, mostly around the idea that a video lesson could be used during class time while I support their learning alongside. I am planning to trial them during the last few weeks of school. Today was Attempt 1.

I've read that Thomas Edison once said "I have not failed. I've simply found 10,000 ways that do not work." I really like that because it emphasises, innovation, creativity, effort, commitment, and positivity. I also like it because if I do my calculations right, I only have 9,999 more tries before I am bound to get it right.

Yesterday, I plotted out my first "Flipped" lesson. I scripted, and rehearsed a video lesson that would be all about diamante poems and the parts of speech. After about 8 hours (off and on) of trying to learn how to use Adobe Visual Communicator 3 and getting the wording and timing just so, I was nearly ready to record. Then it happened.

Something looked a little off. What started out looking like a little bit of a lag evolved into a nonresponsive piece of software. What that I thought was a moment where the computer would freeze and then recover with a little patience turned into a message from Adobe citing a "catostrophical error"! I don't know about anyone else, but when a program uses the word catastrophical, I brace for impact. Not many words grab your attention like that one, let me tell you (especially when it comes from the device that has all your planning and digital resources on it).

To make a long story short, the program needs to be reinstalled and this was a trial version that I cannot afford to pay for (I was hoping to talk the school into purchasing the licence) so the 8 hours I spent on my birthday (did I mention that? Yeah, ON MY BIRTHDAY) were lost to the whims of technological failure. Happy birthday.

The downside is obvious; I had wasted hours learning this software and it amounted to nothing useable. I was lucky, though. The fortunate upside was that, due to all the rehearsing, I walked into my classroom today with a better idea of what I needed to say than I have on any other day.

I guess the whole point I'm trying to make is that we all go gaga for technology in the classroom but let this be a cautionary tale that we can't always rely on it. It makes our lives so much easier but putting all of our eggs in that basket carries a risk of error that can be, well, catastrophic.

I will be the first to admit that I had never heard tell of it before but I am comforted by the fact that as I talk about it with fellow teachers and management staff, they hadn't either. I might even add that they are almost as excited about it as I am (or else they are simply humouring me until I let them be)!

A "flipped classroom" refers to various approaches to teaching but one common theme amongst most applications of the name is that the lessons are delivered in a pocast/video/tutorial-esque manner. My understanding is that the "learning" happens out of the class, while the application of the knowledge and skills is nurtured in class, rather than as homework.

I am really excited to be teaching English again next year and have some BIG ideas for how I will incorporate this into my Literacy Passport. If I were to pick a super overarching theme for my class next year, it would be something along the lines of "Developing Independence". Above all, I want my students to be able to seize control of their learning pathway and excel. Like I said, BIG IDEAS and I can see this as a perfect compliment to that direction.

So, have you heard of a flipped classroom? Have you used it or seen it in operation? Let me know what you know! So I can go into this better prepared.
Over 2 weeks since my last post! The last couple weeks have been crazy with planning for our last term, my cat going missing (2 weeks and still no word - sigh-), and developments for next year that are consuming my limited attention.

So, I have been a bit neglectful with my blogging responsibilities but rest assured I haven't forgotten you all. In fact, I would like to point out that I have updated my blogroll to include several new quality sites that I would love for you to check out! They would love to hear from you. Maybe you could mention that I sent you...that would be swell.

Happy Hallowe'en!
So, I'm going to let her do the talking, LITERALLY! CA-001 is there too to show how I will be "employing him". So go ahead and say hi. I know that for some, this is already part of your practice but for the rest of us, try Positive Forecasting.

"What is that?" you ask.

Well, Positive Forecasting is a not-very-complicated term for a not-very-complicated strategy. It won't stain fabrics and it is safe for children of all ages. Best of all, you don't need to buy or make anything!
(Audience of teachers applause uncontrollably)

Here's a demonstration of how Positive Forecasting can work for you:

Traditional Instruction:
Walk to the gym in a quiet single file line.
(Moderate chuckles as teachers see a replay of everytime they go to the gym and students talk and wander and hold hands. Camera zooms in on one teacher telling her neighbour "That's exactly how my students are.")

How many kids will walk to the gym in single file with lame, boring instructions like that? I'll tell you who: just the ones that would have walked to the gym in single file anyways!

Now watch this!

Positive Forecasting:
Now, we're going to walk to the gym quietly. I know you can do this! You know you can do this. You are an AWESOME bunch and staying in a straight, quiet line is going to be easy!
(Audience watches in amazement and erupt into cheers when they arrive. One teacher lady passes out)

Can you believe it? With Positive Forecasting, the kids were SHAKing with excitement and wanted to show their teacher he was right! They knew they can do it! They arrived with no problems and there were high-fives all around! Awesome!

See the difference Positive Forecasting can make? Positive Forecasting infuses instructions with positive messages in such a way that the students can't bear to disappoint you. And, let's face it, when students don't want to disappoint you, we all win! :)

To get your own Positive Forecasting, simply tell your kids how easy the task is going to be! Be that inspiration they need and make them see the success before they even start.

Easy, eh? You are so clever, it will be a piece of cake for you! I know you can totally do this in your class!
